I suspect a simple driver update will have fixed all of these issues by the time you read this review. Sierra Wireless and Novatel, manufacturers of 3G ( EV-DO and HSDPA) cards, recently released Vista-ready drivers. In fact, I have yet to find an EV-DO-enabled laptop that has this feature up and running. My review unit came with Verizon's EV-DO built in, but there are still issues with Vista compatibility. Cellular broadband is still too expensive, but integrating the modem at least gives you the option of adding that service later on, when prices become cheaper. Wireless connections are vital for frequent travelers. For an ultraportable, the speakers are more than passable for watching a DVD movie, playing music, or voice chatting. The dual-layer DVD burner is integrated, unlike with the ThinkPad X60, which requires a docking station. With Skype and video chat services taking off, I'm surprised more vendors aren't integrating webcams like the 1.3-megapixel one this system has. They want a FireWire port in case they want to transfer some video from their camcorders. People want four USB ports in an ultraportable, not two. When it comes to features, the XPS M1210 delivers.

Granted, you have to take into account the 85-Wh extended battery and the integrated optical drive, which add to the bulk. It's practically the same weight as the 5-pound Apple MacBook 13-inch. The unit weighs 4.9 pounds, which is about a pound heavier than both the Lenovo X60 and Sony SZ series. When you buy an XPS laptop, you're getting a special Dell "first-class" service contract, along with all the bells and whistles, such as the integrated optical drive, discrete graphics, and Windows Vista Ultimate.ĭell labels the M1210 as an ultraportable I'm inclined to call it a borderline mainstream laptop.
