These resource-intensive tasks are, of course, made possible by the system's high-octane components.

Aside from capturing and editing footage from a DV camcorder, Movie Maker 6 is now compatible with high-definition and DVD widescreen formats. The content that you recorded can be edited using Windows Movie Maker 6, which now supports the DVR-MS format (Media Center's recording format) and is built into Windows Vista. All you need is a USB TV tuner to record and watch live TV. This includes the enhanced Windows Media Center Edition.

In addition to running Vista's 3D interface at full speed, you also get all the entertainment features. Vista Ultimate adds another dimension to the M1210.

For the time being, the system has 802.11a/g and Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR to cover your other wireless needs.
DELL XPS M1710 BLUETOOTH UPDATE
I suspect a simple driver update will have fixed all of these issues by the time you read this review. Sierra Wireless and Novatel, manufacturers of 3G ( EV-DO and HSDPA) cards, recently released Vista-ready drivers. In fact, I have yet to find an EV-DO-enabled laptop that has this feature up and running. My review unit came with Verizon's EV-DO built in, but there are still issues with Vista compatibility. Cellular broadband is still too expensive, but integrating the modem at least gives you the option of adding that service later on, when prices become cheaper. Wireless connections are vital for frequent travelers. For an ultraportable, the speakers are more than passable for watching a DVD movie, playing music, or voice chatting. The dual-layer DVD burner is integrated, unlike with the ThinkPad X60, which requires a docking station. With Skype and video chat services taking off, I'm surprised more vendors aren't integrating webcams like the 1.3-megapixel one this system has. They want a FireWire port in case they want to transfer some video from their camcorders. People want four USB ports in an ultraportable, not two. When it comes to features, the XPS M1210 delivers.

You also get a 30-day trial of Dell's On-Call support, which is a fee-based extension to Dell's hardware-only warranty, helping users troubleshoot anything from spyware problems to setting up a home network. You get an MCP(Microsoft Certified Professional) qualified support staff. With an XPS contract, you get the same salesperson throughout the life of the warranty (which Dell equates to 2 years), parts and labor, and home service, where a technician comes to your home if you so choose. I'm sure you've heard horror stories about Dell's tech support. The service you get for an XPS laptop is very different from what Dell provides for the entry-level Inspirons. It's not as much over the top as its gaming sibling, the Dell XPS M1710, but it's attractive enough to garner some oohs and aahs.

I like the LED-lit (blue) DVD playback controls in the front bezel. (If you despise glare, the ThinkPad X60's matte screen is a terrific glare-repellent.) The keyboard is arguably the second best in the industry, next to Lenovo's comfort keys, and the touchpad and mouse buttons are worthy of the XPS name. The 12.1-inch widescreen uses a transflective (glossy) coating, which brings out Vista Ultimate's translucent interface and 3D effects. With the XPS moniker, entertainment features always supersede business features. On the other hand, I am partial to the black cover, classy and conservative enough for business users. Its somewhat boxy appearance reminds me of the Toshiba Satellite U205-S5022, a budget ultraportable. The design isn't as spectacular as that of the MacBook or the Sony SZ Series. Granted, you have to take into account the 85-Wh extended battery and the integrated optical drive, which add to the bulk. It's practically the same weight as the 5-pound Apple MacBook 13-inch. The unit weighs 4.9 pounds, which is about a pound heavier than both the Lenovo X60 and Sony SZ series. When you buy an XPS laptop, you're getting a special Dell "first-class" service contract, along with all the bells and whistles, such as the integrated optical drive, discrete graphics, and Windows Vista Ultimate.ĭell labels the M1210 as an ultraportable I'm inclined to call it a borderline mainstream laptop. The Lenovo ThinkPad X60 (Vista) and the Sony VAIO SZ Series, which do, are both darlings of the marketplace, which tells you the type of company the M1210 keeps. Only a few ultraportables equal the combination of performance and features found on the Dell XPS M1210 (Vista), priced at $2,300 direct.
